Social Classes and Their Influence on Social Behavior Jade Tennis Indiana State University 30 November 2010 Psychology 101-004 Social Classes and Their Influence on Social Behavior Our role in society plays a big part of who we are. More importantly how generous we are toward others in need. People of lower class have a tendency to be more dependent on other whereas people of upper class are more independent. Lower class people act more prosocial fashion due to an increased orientation of others needs. Some say that lower class people help others as a way of adapting to their hostile environments by being greater at prosocial behavior than upper class people. This research study aims to find out if lower class people act†¦show more content†¦In this study they categorized the outcomes by points. When more points where given to them they called it themselves. When they gave some but kept most for them they called it cooperation. When they gave an equal amount of point between themselves and their partner they called it egalitarian. The study found people of lower class were more egalitarian believing in equality, thus giving an equal number of points between themselves and their partners. For the last study participants were told by the instructor that he was waiting for the participant’s partner to arrive. The participants were told they would complete a joint task with their partner followed by sets of individual tasks for different research departments. While waiting for their partner they were instructed to do an individual task and watch a short video clip. The first group watched forty-six seconds video of children in poverty. The second group watched forty-six seconds of the movie All the Presidents Men of two men quietly talking in the courtroom. After watching the video they were asked to fill out a questionnaire about compassion. While filling out the questionnaire the confederate partner would come in apologizing for being late. Test found that people are more distress with the confederate after watching a distressful video clip than those watching the neutral clip.
